Las Palmas, 16 March, 2012 – Day 1 of the second event of this year´s IRC series, an asphalt rally on the island of Gran Canaria, offered an exciting battle for the first place between Jan Kopecký and Andreas Mikkelsen in factory Fabia Super 2000s. After the opening leg (nine stages, 139 kilometres), the Czech Republic´s Jan Kopecký of ŠKODA Motorsport (factory team) is 1.2 seconds ahead of Norway´s Andreas Mikkelsen of ŠKODA UK Motorsport.

Starting right at the beginning and lasting all day long, the fight for the first place was extremely tough and exciting, with only two names on the list of winners of today´s nine stages – Jan Kopecký (five) and Andreas Mikkelsen (four), both in factory Fabií Super 2000s. Hermann Gassner Jr. in a private Fabia Super 2000 is fourth, ŠKODA AUTO Deutschland´s Sepp Wiegand who is making his debut in the Super 2000 category is fifth after Day 1.

Jan Kopecký: “We knew we would fight for every second here. The main thing is not to make a mistake that would cost us valuable points in the Manufacturers category. Every little detail will make a difference”.

The event ends on Saturday with Leg 2 whose programme includes six stages (102 kilometres).

ŠKODA has set up a video news service for the events that it takes part in. Highlights and interviews with drivers and other team members will be available on www.youtube.com/motorsportskoda .
